disease risk factors for three regions of Missouri, 1996

Risk factors focused on in this Missouri study include smoking, physical inactivity, obesity, hypertension and unmonitored cholesterol. Because there is little information on cardiovascular disease risk factors among African Americans, communities with a high percentage of African Americans were selected for this Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services study. Results published in 2000.

Community Task Force on Increasing Physical Activity
This Report on Recommendations of the Task Force on Community Preventive Services from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention features input from numerous medical and healthcare sources around the country concerning increasing physical activity as a way to improve community health. Recommendations include both public and private suggestions.

This website is part of the International Association for the Study of Obesity. It includes articles provided by leading health professionals from around the world. The focus is a distinctly international one illustrating the global scope of the problem.

Minnesota Obesity Center
Dedicated to finding ways to prevent weight gain, obesity and its complications, this center is also one of several around the country funded by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases Obesity Nutrition Research Centers.

Nutrition Transition and Obesity
The United Nations released this report on "the developing world's new burden: obesity." It focuses on how obesity can be seen as a result of a series of changes in diet, physical activity, and health and nutrition-collectively known as the "nutrition transition."

Obesity Education Initiative
The overall purpose of this initiative is to help reduce the prevalence of overweight in order to reduce the risk of related diseases. Special applications include a menu planner, BMI calculator, and treatment guides. It is sponsored by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health.

Diets of America's Children
This publication, entitled The Diets of America's Children: Influence of Dining Out, Household Characteristics, and Nutrition Knowledge, was released by the Economic Research Service of the USDA as a result of surveys revealing shortcomings in children's diets.
